Happy New Year

Tower English has closed for the New Year holidays, we'll see you again in 2009 from January Monday 5th. Until then, have a relaxing time and here is a little video of the kids (and adults) of Tower English doing the 12 Days of Christmas to entertain you. Happy New Year! 

Waiting for Santa...

Yesterday, 35 of the Tower English kids performed their own play, Waiting for Santa, in the Abisuta hall, and did a great job. The whole play was in English and just about everyone remembered their lines. More pictures and video will follow soon... many thanks to Tatsuya Yasuda who kindly took these great pictures. Merry Christmas all, and a Happy New Year.

35人の子供達によるクリスマスショーが無事に終了した。最後の最後まで台詞の練習をしている子供たちを見て、随分英語に馴染んで来たとホントに嬉しくなった。よくやった！年に２回はステージの上で本格的にショーを作って行きたい。とっても良い経験になるはず。来年も楽しみにしています。

Christmas trifle

We had a great time making a Christmas trifle during the Mums' English Club this month (but I did put too much alcohol in and forgot the cornflour for the custard!) What is a Christmas trifle? It's a good British treat at Christmas. Here's the recipe from my Dad, with demonstrations of how to make it thanks to the mums and their little helpers (who also made bread to keep them busy, while Mr Sherriff was muddling up all the ingredients).

To serve six people, you need:

3 egg yolks

600ml double cream

25g sugar

1 level teaspoon of cornflour

1 sponge cake base

50g flaked almonds (lightly toasted)

40ml sherry

200g raspberries (or two frozen bags)

3 bananas

drop or two of vanilla essence

1. Make some custard. Mix 3 egg yolks in a bowl with the cornflour (don't forget!) sugar and vanilla essence
2. Bring 300ml of double cream to boiling point. Pour it over the eggs, whisking it with a fork or whisk to blend evenly

3. Return the custard to the saucepan and over a gentle heat, whisk until sauce has thickened. Leave to cool down (the custard, and you)

4. Break up the sponge cake with your fingers. Put in large glass bowl, add sherry (not too much if kids or a wife are around) and raspberries, stir into a paste

5. Slice bananas into thin slices and cover the paste
6. Pour custard over

7. Whip up the remaining 300ml of cream and spread this over the custard.
8. Decorate the top with toasted almonds
9. Cover and chill in the fridge for two or three hours
10. Eat and have a Merry Christmas!

  

Ho, ho, ho! Santa came to town

マンションのコミュニティールームでクリスマス会がありました。ゲストにTower Englishが呼ばれ、サンタ姿でバスに乗り、駅を渡り会場へ。75人の素敵な子供達に囲まれ、とても楽しい一日でした。お世話になったスタッフの皆様、ありがとうございました。

Walking to the party.

無事にHalloween Partyが終了しました。素敵なコスチュームを用意してくれたママたち、ありがとう、そしてお疲れさまでした。子供たちはとっても喜んでいました。「ここにリボンがついているの」「ここにカボチャがあるんだよ」ってたくさんの子供たちが着ている衣装の説明もしてくれて。。。いい思い出になった事と思います。自宅から１６人の子供たちとハロウィーンの衣装でゾロゾロとスタジオへ向かいました。それがとってもかわいらしかったので、来年は会場まで仮装行列も追加しても面白いかもしれませんね。Christmas Season is coming up!さぁ今度はクリスマスですね。１２月２３日（火）にプレイグループ０〜３才児用のChristmas PartyとTower Englishの生徒さん用にChristmas Showを企画します。現在Mr&Mrs Sherriffのオリジナル脚本を作成中。ご家族の方に素敵なShowをお見せできるように子供たちにも頑張ってもらいますね。２３日は空けておいて頂けると幸いです。

Mr Sherriff and the mothers and toddlers who came to the Halloween Party this morning. We have many more pictures, we'll put them on the internet soon, but first, we have to get ready for the next party for older kids this afternoon. Happy Halloween!

Anglo-German-Japanese summit

The other day I was lucky enough to have a cup of tea and a chat with Meg (pictured left) the daughter of one of my students, Taiko (right) who pops in for a lesson between trips to the coffee shops of Abiko and her allotment. Meg was on a flying visit back home, she usually lives in Germany with her German husband and we all three talked about the differences between Germany, Japan and England and compared notes about learning languages and dealing with life in a different country, culture and language. Here is what we concluded:

• We should encourage children to be multi-lingual. It is very difficult for adults to learn new languages, but children can easily handle two or three or more, kids are naturally language sponges. My children know to speak English to me and Japanese to their mother, and that causes them no trouble.
• If Meg starts a family she has a great opportunity to pass on three languages: Japanese when she is alone with her kids, German when her husband is in charge of the nappies and English when all are present together (Meg and her husband, Robbie, speak English together).
• Don't listen to people (who only speak one language) who will tell you that Japanese, German or English is "such a difficult language" that you should teach your kids only one... nonsense. If you use only one, it will be too late for the other languages.
• Re-enforce the minority language. If Meg stays in Germany, she should focus on exposing her kids to as much Japanese and Japanese culture as possible. Equally, if she should move back to Japan, she should change focus to re-enforce German, as the minority language.
• Dictionaries and patience are vital in a multi-lingual relationship. I used to know a Chinese lady married to a German man, and they lived in England. They spoke English together, but when they argued they needed four dictionaries. He would call her something in German. He would have to look it up in a German-to-English dictionary, then she would have to look what he had said in an English-to-Cantonese dictionary, then think of a response, translate it in the Cantonese-to-English dictionary, then he would have to look it up in the English-to-German dictionary. Much easier just to not argue (but less educational).
• As cultures mix, so does your food. A German sweet white wine goes well with sushi. Ton-katsu and chips go well together. My favourite meal is marbu-tofu followed by apple crumble. 

Halloween Party coming up! ＜完全予約制＞

いよいよ今週はHalloween Party。３１日（金）１０：００〜はプレイグループの子供達４９人が集合する。仮装してくる子たちもたくさんいるので、とっても楽しみにしています。そして同日１７：００〜は幼稚園児から小６までの子供達が６０人勢揃いする予定。友達を連れてきたいと言う子供達のリクエストに応えて大人数になりました。なかなかいいゲームができると思います。楽しみにしていてください！！

Help me run around Teganuma, please!

Did you know that Sherriff-sensei is running around Teganuma on Sunday? In England, before a race, people often ask others to give a little money. All of the money goes to charity. I am supporting Book Aid, a charity that gives books to the poorest children in the world. If you want to help, here's what to do:

1. Click on my sponsorship page.
2. Enter how much money you would like to donate (in pounds - there are about ¥200 to one pound), and write a message, or give secretly if you prefer.
3. Fill out the online credit card details.
4. The money will then be sent directly to the charity.
5. I then run around Teganuma.

Book Aid says that for every five pounds (¥1,000) donated, they can give four books to people in the poorest area of the world, sub-Saharan Africa. Why books and not food and medicine? Because knowledge is power and what you can learn from reading can change lives. If we could raise 250 pounds (¥50,000) that would mean 200 new books for those in need. So far, we have raised 110 pounds (¥22,000). Can you add a little to that? Every little bit adds up...

Speech Day

１０月５日のスピーチ大会の写真が届きました。いつもながら素敵な写真を撮ってくれたMayさんに感謝します。１１５人の前でしっかりと英語で自己紹介している子供たち。素晴らしかったですね。英語を話している時のうれしそうな子供たちの顔が、ご覧いただけると思います。スピーチ大会は、毎年行っていくので、お子さんたちそれぞれの上達度もわかっていただけると思います。楽しみにしていてくださいね。

イベント盛りだくさん

スピーチ大会も無事に終了し、子供達も緊張感から解放された事でしょう。スピーチの事を聞くと、「楽しかった。１００人の前で話すって、たいした事無かったよ！」って子供たちは言っていました。勇気ある６人の大人の生徒さんのスピーチは素晴らしかったです。お疲れさまでした。オリジナルT-shirtを間に合わせてくれたマエダ印刷さんにも感謝します。そして司会進行役を引き受けてくれた、純ちゃんにも感謝します。ありがとうございました。さぁ今度は『Halloween Party』ですね。３１日の朝はプレイグループ用、夕方は幼稚園児〜小６までの子供たち用の二本立て企画です。喜ぶ子供たちの顔を想像しながら、２人で色々なゲームを企画中。楽しみにしていてくださいね。

Tower English gets fashionable!

Did you think Tower English was only a language school? Well, not only do we teach adults and children, serve delicious tea and coffee for our students and sell Ceylon tea... now we have entered the fashion world too! If you were at our speech day, you will have seen our cool new T-shirts made by Maeda Printing Company that feature our logo on the front and the number 08 on the back. Why 08? It's for the year 2008 - our first complete year in business. These are rare collectors' items (there are only two!) but if you would like a T-shirt, we might print more...  

New-look classroom

We have a new-look classroom. Out with the old dining table and chairs and in with these leather sofas and coffee table. Why?

• We teach real English, so we wanted a more natural environment.
• The classroom is more friendly, more like an English living room or British club.
• Removing the high table and straight-back chairs means the focus is away from reading and writing and more on speaking and listening.
  
• It's Tower English's one-year birthday present to our students.

What a party!

I hope everyone had a good time at our first anniversary party and speech day, I know we did. We had 115 guests in the great hall at Abisuta. Our students performed brilliantly, and clearly had worked really hard - harder than Mr Sherriff... who only started working on his Japanese speech at 9am this morning. There are so many people to thank for making the day a success - not least "MC" Jun who operated the high-tech CD player like a professional. My favourite moment was in the game of "English whispers" when the adults managed to transform the message "Come to Tower English, we've got the best students this side of Tokyo" into "Hawaiian English is the best in Tokyo". And many thanks to photographer May Arai who snapped everything that moved. We'll show her photos here when we get them. Now, I need to rest my voice for tomorrow's lessons.

Tower English １周年記念

１０月２日にTower Englishの１周年記念を迎えました。ありがとうございます。イギリス在住時代の友人から素敵なお祝いが到着したのも２日。ありがとう。１周年記念パーティーの写真を入れますね。去年の１０月は１６人の生徒さんと出会いスタートした教室も、現在は７０人の生徒さんが日々頑張っています。プレイグループのお友達は、２４１人になりました。子供達一人一人と話すチャンスがあるので、名前もほとんど覚えています。去年１０月に出会った１０ヶ月の子が、今朝わたしの顔を見て、"How are you?"と声をかけてくれました。ジーンと来てしまいました。Tower Englishで出会った人たちは、みんなそれぞれちゃんとした夢を持った人たち。「夢はみるものだけじゃなく、叶えるためにある！」これからも皆さんの夢を実現させるために、少しでもサポートできればと思っています。今後も変わらず、楽しく生きた英語、使える英語を教えていきたいと思っています。１０月５日の一周年記念+スピーチ大会を楽しみにしています！一緒に楽しんじゃいましょうね。

Almost party time

There are just two weeks until our party at Abisuta to celebrate one year of being in business. Are you coming along? If you are, have you practised your speech? Don't worry, it doesn't need to be very long. All the kids have been hard at work preparing their speeches. Our youngest students (ages three and four) are going to introduce themselves and tell us their favourite colour. The oldest kids are going to talk about what they want to do in the future. And our adult students? They are supposed to give a quick introduction ("Hello, my name is...") and answer the question, "Why are you studying English?" One good answer is "So I can have fun at the party!" See you on October 5th.

スピーチ大会

Tower Englishも１０月で１周年を迎えます。ありがとうございます。

去年のクリスマスパーティーは総勢６６人が我が家に集まり、生徒さん同士の交流ができました。今年は１周年記念にスピーチ大会を予定しています。年少クラスから大人のクラスまで。初めは「えーやだやだ」って言ってた子供達も２回目のレッスンでは、「○○○は英語で何て言うの？」と自分の言いたい事が出て来てやる気満々。とっても楽しみにしています。１年目にして、大勢の人の前でマイクを持ってしっかりと自己紹介が言えるようになるなんて凄い事ですよね。大人の生徒さんたちにも是非チャレンジして欲しい。間違っても全然いいんです。大切な事は、人前で自信をもって英語で話そうと言う意気込みじゃないでしょうか？せっかく習っているんですもん。使いましょうよ！

Last playgroup from home

今日は高野山の自宅で最後の親子英語プレイグループだった。

悪天候にも関わらず、８人の元気なお友達が集まってくれました。ありがとう。

わかなちゃんは、ダンスが上手で、one two threeも上手に言えるようになってきたね。お片づけはいつも一番。ゆうたくんは、たくさん英単語が言えるようになりました。色も形ももうバッチリですね。たくとくんは、上手に色が言えるようになりました。Hello songもばっちりだね。いままでお時間を作って高野山までいらしてくださった皆さん、ありがとうございました。たくさんのお友達を紹介してくれたママたちにも感謝します。これからも水金のプレイグループは、スタジオでずーと続けていきますので、よろしくお願いいたします。

Dancing time

今日は２７人のお友達が集合しました。たくさん歌を歌って、ダンスも上手にできました。レストランごっこの時は、美味しいごはんをたくさん作って遊べました。今日もたくさんの子供達がI'm _____.って英語でお名前が言えました。スゴいね！これからもドンドン英語であそぼうね。

Playgroup moving to Dance Studio Nagaoka

２００７年１０月からスタートした親子英語プレイグループも２１２人のお友達ができました。ここで知り合いになったママたちの交流もドンドン広がっているようです。自宅でのプレイグループは８月２８日が最後となります。たくさんのお子さんたちに、もっとのびのびと走り回っていただけるダンススタジオナガオカで水曜日と金曜日はずっと続けていきます。是非遊びに来て下さいね。

We are excited that from next week, the playgroup moves permanently to Dance Studio Nagaoka (opposite Abiko city hall) - on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 11:30am. We started the playgroup from our front room with just four children on October 2, 2007, and now we have had 212 children come through our doors. There is just one more playgroup at our house - on Thursday 28th August.

Back to school

Just some of the new books we'll use in children's classes.

We have had a lovely few weeks off and hope everyone has had a nice break this August - we are open again from Monday the 18th, remember? What's new? Well let's see...

• We are holding a one-year anniversary party and speech day at Abisuta library on Sunday October 5th. Bring a dish and enjoy the show, which the children will start working on in classes shortly.
• For children's classes, we have bought 30 new Oxford Reading Tree books. These are the same books British primary schools use to help children to learn to read.
• From August 18th, we will be using a new car park. There is space reserved for two cars in the car park on our street, next to Kounoyama Elementary School. Please use it if you drive to lessons. Ask us if you need directions.

スリランカ直輸入ー美味しい紅茶の紹介 - it's teatime!

Tower Englishの教室に素敵な紅茶をディスプレイしてみました。本場スリランカからの直輸入なので、やっぱりその辺の紅茶のTasteとは違う。イギリスで売られている紅茶の大半はスリランカからの輸入だったので、懐かしい味がした。粋な紅茶入れなので、ちょっとしたプレゼントなら喜ばれる事間違いなし。KASHE INTERNATIONALの美味しい紅茶。是非試してみてください。

Here at Tower English, we like to try new things and the latest is offering some Sri Lankan tea for sale. People think English tea is from England, actually most of it is from Sri Lanka, so we are delighted to be able to offer the real thing. By the way, you don't have to drink it with milk and sugar, but most English (and Sri Lankans) do. Cheers.  

親子プレイグループの変更

毎週火曜日と木曜日に自宅で行っていた親子プレイグループを、８月２８日をもちまして終了する事になりました。今までたくさんのお子さんに参加していただき、本当にありがとうございました。引き続き、水曜日と金曜日はダンススタジオ・ナガオカで行います。５２畳のスペースで思う存分走り回って頂けます。駐車場もスタジオ表側に３台、スタジオ裏側に４台程のスペースがありますので、ご利用ください。

てっぺいくん、おめでとう！

今日、親子プレイグループのお友達が２００人に達しました。てっぺいくんが２００人目のお友達。おめでとう。今朝は、徒歩１時間かけて参加してくれたママもいました。とても笑顔がかわいいさりーなちゃんでした。これからも楽しい歌やゲームを続けていこうと思います。よろしくお願いします。

New signs

Our youngest students at today's playgroup were the first to see our new signs. One is a lovely hand-made wooden "Tower English" planter that Uncle Chako in Hokkaido made. He is a teacher at a school for the blind, and carpentry is just a weekend hobby for him. But check out his website and you can see he has the skill for a second career. The other sign is a new owl design he is trying out. What do you think of them?

Tower Englishのサインは、北海道の叔父、チャコからのプレゼント。普段は盲学校で教師をしているが、週末には工房で趣味に没頭する。素敵なプレゼントありがとう。そしてたくさんの英単語を話し始めたプレイグループに参加してくれている子供達、一緒に写真取ってくれてありがとう。

 

Mums' English Club

第６回目となるMums' English Clubには、９人のママたちが参加してくれました。ちゃんと英語モードで来てくれていたので、９０分ずっと英語でした。お疲れさまです。オモチャで遊んで待っていてくれたチビちゃんたちもありがとう。ちょっとしたアンケートに記入してもらい、それをバラバラに配り、誰が書いたアンケート用紙なのか探し当てる。。。簡単そうだけど、結構時間がかかるゲーム。もちろんパートナー探しから質問まで全て英語で行う。日本人がたくさん集まれば、必然的に日本語になってしまいそう。。。でも我が家ではしっかり英語になっていました。普段英語を話す機会が少ないママたちだけど、しっかりした英語を話していました。レベル云々よりも話そうという気持ちが大切。日本人に英語で話しかけるという事自体、正直いって難しい事なんですよね。毎月遠方からいらっしゃるママがいますが、今回は一番遠いだろうと思われる方・・・・カナリア諸島在住のママでした。普段はスペイン語話しているママだけど、しっかり英語も話されていてビックリです。"See you next July!"と言って帰られたのがとても印象的。８月のMums' English Clubはお休みです。９月から毎月第一木曜日に変更となります。Have a lovely summer holiday, but don't forget your English!

Who will be number 200? ー200人目のお友達は誰？

朝のプレイグループのお友達が１９９人に達しました。今日、２００人目のお友達にお会いできるかなとカメラを持って待っていましたが、お会いできませんでした。来週かな？楽しみにしています。毎週参加してくれる子たちは、ドンドン歌も言葉も覚えています。にょい棒が出て来たら、UP, Down...と言い始める子供たちもいるし、数を数えるのもだんだん慣れて来ているよう。毎週参加してくれている、たくみくんは英語の歌が大好き。ちょこちょこ英語の単語がでてくるようになり、とっても楽しみです。ゆめちゃんはとっても発音がきれい。どんな単語でもすぐにリピートできちゃいます。ちさとくんはもう色と形は完璧。たった９０分の英語シャワーだけど、歌やダンスを通して英語の楽しさを感じてもらいたい。英語を話すママ、話したいママにもたくさんお会いできました。どれくらい話せるかではなく、どれくらい話したいかという気持ちを大切にしていきたいですね。

Good, better or the best?

Is London more expensive than Tokyo? Is it cheaper to live there? Which is the most expensive city to live in, and the least expensive, in the world? Does more expensive mean better or worse? Today we will find out... because the cost of living is the topic for Victoria Class to practise comparatives (bigger than) and superlatives (the biggest). Here are the grammar rules to help:

Comparing two things:

• Short adjective + er: Sapporo is colder than Tokyo. Abiko is cheaper than Roppongi.
• More/Less + long adjective: Sapporo is less expensive than Tokyo. Roppongi is more exciting than Abiko.
• As + adjective + as: Roppongi is as expensive as Soho (both the same). New York is not as big as Tokyo (both are different).
• Good/bad - better/worse: Tea in New York is worse than in London, but the coffee is better.
• Much + er or more/less: Roppongi is much more exciting than Abiko. (a lot more).  

Comparing three or more things:

• Short adjective + est: Athens is the oldest city in Europe. London has the coolest clubs in Europe.
• Long adjective + the most/the least: The most expensive city in Europe is London. The least welcoming city is Paris.
• Good/bad - the best/the worst: The best English school is in Kounoyama. Reykjavik has the worst fast food.

OK, those are the rules. So, which is the most expensive place to live in the world? Here are the top 20 (taken from CNN), but remember, the most expensive doesn't always mean the best...)

Treasure hunt - 宝探し

今週のKidsレッスンは宝探しを久しぶりに行った。３才から１２才までの子供たちの反応は面白いもの。とっても楽しませてもらった。最後に探し当てたアンパンマンの缶の中にキャンディーが入っているのを見て、喜ぶ小さな子供たち。「えっ？これが宝だったの？」とがっかりする高学年の子供たち。やっぱり宝の内容は年齢によって変えないとダメですね。見つけ出した手紙を一生懸命読もうとし、ヒントを少しづつ英語で出していく間、真剣に「何だ何だ？」と想像している姿はホントにかわいかった。１３枚の手紙のひとつに、Look at the back page of The Japan Times (Newspaper)が入っていた。もちろん難しい問題だったが、Newspaperと聞いて、トイレに駆け込んだ子供たち。Toilet paperだと思い込んで、一生懸命トイレ中を探していたんでしょうね。（笑）みんなお疲れさまでした。宝探しで出て来た新しい言葉、ちょっとどれだけ覚えているか次のレッスンで聞いてみます。

A week of news - in English

If you want to practise your English reading, but don't have the time or patience for any of the books we have here for you to borrow, why not try an English language newspaper? Don't know where to get one? Tower English now subscribes to the Japan Times, so if you want to read the latest news about Japan and the world in English, just ask. We keep a week of copies in the classroom, so there should always be one available for you to take home - for free. 

Car parking spaces

We have two new car parking spaces for students. They are about 100 metres from Tower English, on the road to Kounoyama Elementary school. They are on the left side. There is a yellow chain and a small yellow sign that says "Tower English". Please use the spaces if you drive to lessons. If you cannot find the car park, please ask us and we will show you. 

The best place in the world?

I enjoyed myself during Mums' English Club, our monthly get-together for busy mothers to chat in English. We had a fun game of guess the celebrity (we all had different names on our backs - including David Beckham, Madonna and Queen Elizabeth II, among others - and had to find out who we were by asking others questions). Then, after a chat and a cup of tea, we discussed: "Where is the best place in the world to live?" Can you guess the top answer? Hawaii and Okinawa were popular, but the favourite was... Abiko. What do you think?

Coffee time

Our policy has always been to make learning English as fun or as relaxing as possible, and part of that mission has been to provide some decent tea and coffee for students. If you have been wondering where we get our delicious coffee from, wonder no more - it is from Lancamento Cafe, a quirky shop run by a real character, Morimoto-san. Check out his website here, or better still, go there and try a brew or two.

新年少クラス

４月からスタートした年少クラス、と言っても、３月までは毎週親子英語プレイグループに参加してくれていて、ひと際目立っていた子供たち。毎週会うのが本当に楽しみなクラス。スポンジのような６人の子供たちはドンドン言葉を吸収していく。Thank you. Here you are. You're welcome. How are you? I'm fine, thank you.....など、状況によって、彼らの口から自然に出てくる言葉はたくさんある。今日のレッスンでは、"I like Pink." "Me, too!"という表現を使ってみた。きっとどんな意味かな？？と頭の中でいろいろ考えていた事だろう。テキストには出てこない表現でも、どんどん使っていきたい。今後、Classroom Englishを少しづつ導入してみる予定でいる。Can I go to the toilet please? I'm thirstyなど、レッスン中に使える英語表現を使わせていきたい。

小２／３クラス

What do you like? - I like frogs.     What do you want? - I want a frog.

この質問に対する答えにははっきり違いがある。２週にわたり例題を使って繰り返した結果、

今日のレッスンの最後に日本語で二つの文章の違いを聞いてみた。きちんと違いがわかっていた。思わず２人で拍手。普段のレッスン中では一切日本語を使わない。いちいち日本語へ翻訳して理解するのでは流暢な英語を話す事は難しくなる。たくさん想像し、英語で考え、そして英語で理解できるようになって欲しいという願いから日本語は使わない。レッスン中に意味が分からず、苦しんでいる子供たちに「この場は日本語で説明した方が・・・」と何度も思った事がある。でもそれは本当に必要な事なのか？意味を理解しようと大変な思いをした単語や言い回しは、きっといつまでも忘れないと思う。英語から直ぐ日本語に訳してしまうと、その場は理解できても、その記憶はいつまで持つか・・・ではないだろうか。理解力に個人差はあっても、必ず自分なりに答えがでるはず。その時を待つ事はとっても大切な事。大人でも同じ事が言える。英語で話している時や洋書を読んでいる時に知らない単語が出て来たら、直ぐに辞書を引かず、前後の関係からどんな意味なのか考える。自分なりに「こういう意味だな」と結果が出た時に初めて辞書で確認してみる。苦労して覚えた単語の意味はなかなか忘れないもの。是非試して欲しい。

新小１のクラス

４月から５人でスタートした小１のクラスは、１ヶ月半を終え、子供たちの変化ぶりにびっくりする。全く英語に触れていなかった子でも、毎週聞く話すの練習で耳や口が慣れてくる。A-Zのカードと色／形のリレーゲームは毎週行うが、今日は本当にスラスラとQ&Aができていて嬉しかった。常に話しかけ、常に声に出して欲しいので、少人数でも講師は２人。レッスン中はかなりの音量。それでも明るく元気に話す事は大歓迎。外国人に"Do you speak English?" と聞かれたら、"Yes I do!"と笑顔で答えられる子供たちになって欲しい。現在Tower Englishに毎週通って来てくれる素晴らしい子供たち３４人への心からの願いだ。

親子英語プレイグループ

１０月にスタートしたプレイグループも７ヶ月経ち、１８６人の子供たちと会う機会がありました。１０月当初から来てくれている子供たちも大きくなり、我が子のように嬉しいです。まだまだ赤ちゃんだったまゆちゃんは、もう１才５ヶ月。先週は初めてstar、circle等の単語を発するようになり、びっくりしました。３才になり幼稚園に入園する時にはどうなっているのか今から楽しみです。たくとくんは、毎週笑顔でスタジオ入りし、手を振ってくれます。ABCカードで、一生懸命口の形を真似しようとしている姿は本当にかわいい！英語の勉強でもなく、英語が話せるようになるために強制する事が目的ではありません。英語の歌を聞いて踊り、本を読み、レストランごっこで食べ物の名前を聞いたりする事によって、英語に興味を持ってくれること。こんな事、あんな事を英語で言ってみたいなと思い始めてくれる事・・・そんなシンプルな事が私たちの本当に望んでいる事。

Talking about the future

Future tenses can be confusing in English. I'm talking about the future in the free conversation class at 3pm tomorrow - it will be fun, I'm going to ask students lots of questions, because they might be unsure about the grammar. In that sentence I used four ways to talk about the class tomorrow: to be +ing, will + infinitive, going to + infinitive and might + infinitive. Why? Well, because there is a small difference in meaning in each.

• When something is fixed for the future, or in the diary we use to be +ing: I'm talking about the future at 3pm tomorrow. I'm getting married on the 10th of June.
• For making predictions, promises or immediate decisions we use will + infinitive:  It will be fun. I won't be late for my lesson. Wait a minute, I'll make some coffee.
• For intentions - something we are planning now about the future - we use going to + infinitive: I'm going to ask questions. I'm going to watch Casablanca tonight.
• If there is a lot of doubt, might + infinitive is best: Students might be unsure about the grammar. I might go to England or America on holiday.

Well done. Now, I'm going to go to bed...

Language of love

"Get" is a very common word in English. You can get up, get lost, get tired and get better at English, and still there are many more meanings to learn. "Get" appeared recently in a lesson featuring vocabulary to talk about relationships, here are some of the expressions:

• to get engaged (promise to marry): I got engaged when I was 25.
• to get married: She got married to her high school sweetheart.
• to get divorced (end a marriage): They got divorced after the children had grown up.
• to go out (as boyfriend and girlfriend): They went out for a month before they kissed.
• to fall in love: He fell in love with her between dessert and the espresso.

Movie time

Saturdays begin early at Tower English with a 9am "salaryman" class. While sipping our cups of coffee, we always begin with a little chat about what we have been doing in the past week. Today, I learnt about the students' movie tastes. They have watched The Great Dictator (Charlie Chaplin's satire of Hitler), The Da Vinci Code and a bit of Casablanca. I have Casablanca on DVD, so I was happy to lend it to one of my students. Fortunately, it has Japanese subtitles - this is an elementary class after all! 

2008年4月28日

4月も終わりとなってしまいました。4月に入ってからTower Englishヘ入会した方々もたくさんいます。66名のレギュラー生徒さんと178名の親子プレイグループへ参加してくれた子供とママたち。ありがとう。出会いを大切にし、これからもどんどん生きた英語を提供していきます。最近うれしかったことは、年少さんのクラスの3歳の子供たちが、会話の投げ交わしをやり始めたこと。それから小学校４～６年のクラスの子供たちもどんどん会話が形となってきたこと。何よりも感動したのは、やっぱり1歳11ヶ月のさあやちゃんが、初めて「triangle」やら「oval」など形の名前を言ってくれた事。おうちでは結構英単語を話していたそうだけど、たくさんの言葉が口から出てくるようになってきて、ホントに感動でした。これからもどんどん英語大好きKidsが増えればなと思っています。

The start of a new school year

It's April 1st, and we are so happy to welcome six children who are starting our kindergarten year one class. They all survived their trial lesson and can already introduce themselves. And a special hello to Takafumi, who despite his young age of 18 is happy to take our salaryman class on Saturday mornings. We are happy to have him because he brings the average age of the class down a lot, making us old men feel younger. 

2008年3月30日

今年の新年少クラスの体験が28日に終わり、無事に6名確定しました。全員親子プレイグループに参加してくれていた子たちなので、かれこれ4ヶ月～5ヶ月のお付き合い。はやたくんは教室立ち上げ当初からのレギュラーでまだ2歳だけど、自己紹介とレストランごっこの時の「Here you are」は完璧。5ヶ月で目覚しい変化。今後楽しみ。しゅうまくんとゆうせいくんはわが教室のスター。リピートの力と単語の暗記力はびっくりするほど。あみちゃんはアルファベットゲームでは、ほとんどの単語が口からでてくるほど。発音もどんどんきれいになっていってる。かずきくんは、げんきな子。動物の絵を見せて、即座に日本語で「ぞうさん」。でもそのあと、「elephant」と言うと即座にリピート。今後期待しています。こうくんは、3月に出会った子。英語をやっていたのが直ぐにわかった。ｒの音とｔｈの音がきれいに出せていたね。クラスにもすぐに慣れるから大丈夫。6人とも初めて出会った頃の事をたくさん覚えている。「おはよう」って教室へ入ってきた日から「Good Morning」へと変わっていった事も鮮明に覚えている。その子たちが、体験の日は自己紹介が完璧にできました。これは本当にすばらしかった。4月からは新年少クラスで、もっともっと生きた英語を学んで行こうね。新しく幼稚園もスタートし大変な毎日だと思うけど、がんばれ。私たちが一番楽しみにしているクラス。一緒にがんばっていこうね！！
親子プレイグループのお友達が166人に達しました。でも今年幼稚園に入学していくお友達もたくさんいるので、少しさびしくなりますね。持ち前の明るさで、幼稚園でもたくさんお友達をつくって、がんばってね。また会えることを楽しみにしています。英会話レギュラーの生徒さんは61人に達しました。今年のクリスマスパーティは本当に盛り上がりそうですね。今から何だかウキウキです。由恵

2008年3月14日

今日は1歳9ヶ月のあんなちゃんが初めてお名前を言えた日。とっても素晴らしかったよ。私たちもママも感動して、ちょっとグッとこみ上げてくるものがあった。これから先、どんどんいろんな単語が口から出てくるようになるんだろうね。先生たちは楽しみにしています。朝のプレイグループに参加してくれるお友達が今日で147人に達しました。先日は高野山の自宅に21人集まってくれました。さすがに、マーチもできない状態だったので、そろそろ自宅の場合は定員を決めたほうがいいかなと思っています。プレイグループを通して、たくさんの英語を話すママたちに出会えました。Mum's English Club第二弾には、7人のママたちに参加していただきました。ありがとう。アッという間の90分でしたね。いろいろなお話ができてよかったです。今後もいろんなトピックを考えておきます。楽しみにしていてくださいね。私の大好きなゴスペルのダイレクターの美声を聞かせていただくこともできました。鳥肌立つほど感動しました。ありがとう。レギュラーの生徒さんも56人に達しました。子供たちのクラスも人数が増えてきたので、できる限り話すチャンスを増やすため、教師二人でレッスンを進行しています。大人の生徒さんも自信がついてきた方々は顔つきが違いますね。好きなことをやっている顔は素敵。いい励みになります。これからも引き続き応援させていただきます。　由恵

Doing the dance studio splits

Thanks to all the mums and kids who have made the jump from our living room playgroup to the Nagaoka Dance Studio on Wednesdays and Fridays. Everyone has been positive about the extra space at the studio. It's great fun to sing "I'm a Little Teapot" in front of the full size mirrors there, except I was a little too energetic in my teapot pouring and managed to split my jeans in mid-stream, but the show had to go on. I just feel sorry for the good folk of Kounoyama who might have caught a glimpse of my underpants as I wandered back home in my cut jeans. No, it wasn't some hip new fashion all the foreigners are wearing, I can assure you. 

2008年2月4日

今日はMums' English Clubの初日でした。大雪による道路状況で心配していましたが、三人の素敵なママたちに参加してもらうことができました。楽しいひと時をありがとう。たいすけくん、しほちゃん、えまちゃん、お利口さんにしていてくれてありがとう。ママたちがマットの上で輪になり、真ん中におもちゃを置いておけば、チビちゃんたちはそれぞれ遊んでくれるようで、心配する必要もなかったみたいです。とっても充実した90分だったと思います。外国に住まない限り、なかなか英語を話すチャンスはないですよね。英語を話したい、忘れたくない、とっても興味があるというママたちは、是非ご参加ください。靴を脱いでから、門を出るまでEnglish Onlyに挑戦してみましょう。今後在日外国人のママたちにも参加してもらえるといいなとも思っています。

2008年1月31日

1月もたくさんの素晴らしいお子さん達が来てくれました。今日で122人に達しました。ありがとう。我が家でのアクティビティーもそろそろ窮屈になり始めました。マーチをするとき、ジャンプをする時、もっともっとのびのびと自由に走り回らせたい、歩き始めたチビちゃんたちには、ぶつかる心配なく、存分に歩いて欲しいと思い始め、プレイグループに最高の場所を探しました。我孫子市寿の市役所の向かいに位置するDance Studio Nagaoka （ダンススタジオ　ナガオカ）の５４畳あるダンスホールを毎週水曜日と金曜日に借りることにしました。そのダンススタジオなら、今までできなかったようなアクティビティーも存分できるようになります。鏡の前でみんな一列に並んで、I'm a little teapot ができたら最高だろうと二人で楽しみにしています。大きすぎるほどの更衣室もあり、お子さんのオムツかえもできます。ラウンジもついているので、今までと同様ママたちにTea Timeも楽しんでいただけます。水曜日と金曜日に是非お越しください。楽しみにしています。スタート日は数日以内に決定いたします。　　　　　　由恵

Our first century

Oh happy day -- we were delighted to welcome our 100th new

 student to the playgroup. The bemused winner was two-year-old Airi Kuzu

ha who  received an ABC puzzle from us and our youngest, Emma (our hardest working employee). Airi was a natural, by the end of 90 minutes she had mastered the complexities of matching shapes in English and had spoken several words in English, the hardest being "octopus". We learned later that her mother is a gospel choir director in Kashiwa, so we hope our singing wasn't too out of tune.

2008年1月18日

今日は記念すべき一日でした。あいりちゃんの参加でプレイグループのお友達が100人に達した日。ありがとう。しかもその100人目のお友達は、初めてにして、たくさんの言葉をリピートできる子でした。ゴスペルの歌の先生というママの美声も少しだけ聞かせてもらい、まだ興奮しています。（私はゴスペルコーラスの大ファン！）たくさんのお友達をご紹介してくださるママたちにも感謝しています。皆さんの大切なお子さんたちだから、二人で真心込めて接していきたいと常に思っています。今日はレギュラーで来てくれる1歳6ヶ月のSちゃんに誘われてダンスしました。ママから離れて笑顔で手を引っ張ってくれたのは初めて。とてもうれしかった！もうひとつ記念する出来事がありました。幼稚園児クラスのFちゃんが英語で自己紹介がしっかり言えた日。わたしたちはこの日を2ヶ月弱待っていました。素晴らしかった！これからもゆっくりでいいから一緒にがんばっていこうね。心に残る素敵な一日でした。ありがとう。　　　由恵

Grumpy youngsters

Was that really snow on the ground this morning? Yes, it was and here is a picture to prove it. As excited as our students were to see the snow when they arrived for the playgroup, by hometime at 11:30am, it had all melted, even from Snow White's little friends. Now there's a reason to be grumpy...

あけましておめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願いいたします。1月に入ってから、生徒さんが増え、現在40名の生徒さんにいらしていただいております。皆さんどんどん自信をもって話し始めているのがよくわかります。今後とても楽しみです。せっかく習うなら、楽しくそして実用的な英語をと心がけています。一緒にがんばっていきましょうね。朝のプレイグループのお友達も95人に達しました。Tower EnglishのスターのSくんは英語のセンスが抜群。とってもきれいな発音でリピートできるようになりました。色や形や動物の名前も自信を持って言える様になり、毎回会うのがとても楽しみ。子供って本当にすばらしい。　由恵

Back to the future

Well, a late Happy New Year to all, but before we start looking forward to the future, let me just take one last look back to 2007 (my favourite subject in school was history, you know). At year's end, after three months of being in business, we had 35 students enrolled taking one lesson a week and had welcomed 94 toddlers through our doors for our daiily playgroup, though thankfully not all of them showed up at the same time! We have some great students at our school including a bookstore owner, a social dance instructor, a cram school manager, an Elvis Presley fan, a budding novelist, an antiques expert, a classical pianist and a ballet dancer. Some of our students have been studying English for years, but for most this is their first experience learning English. Well done to all.
