12月25日にプレイグループの子供たちのクリスマスパーティがありました。29人の子供たちとそのママたちといい思い出がつくれたと思います。今年はどうしても自宅でパーティをしたく、人数制限をしてしまい、参加できない子供たちがたくさんいました。ごめんなさい。サンタさんの登場で子供たちも喜んでくれました。素敵なサンタさんだと好評でした。主人がどうしてもサンタ役をお願いしたい人だったので、無理なお願いもきいていただいたときは、ともてうれしかったです。ありがとうございます。毎週来てくれるLちゃんはハローソングが歌えるようになりました。Yくんは自信を持って英語で自己紹介ができるようになりました。そのうち大好きな歌もすんなり歌えるようになるんでしょうね。とても楽しみにしています。今年は28日が最終日です。1月は7日から開始です。　　由恵

  

   

Christmas party

Well, what a lovely time we had at the Christmas party on Sunday. We were really glad that 57 people came along and judging from the pictures, everyone had fun, I know we did. I can't thank enough all our guests who brought some wonderful food and even better, a desire to have a good time in English. The highlights for me were watching the children beat the adults in the game of  English Whispers, and the look on Mrs Komuro's face when she won the grand final of the stone, scissors, paper competition. A very special thanks to May Arai who took some great pictures. All the pictures are one the left of this blog. Now, where did I put my drink?

42 sounds of English

Now here's a question for you - which of the 42 different sounds of English am I demonstrating to two attentive students? I'll give you the answer at the end of this entry, so be patient if you can't work it out. The actions are to help young learners remember the sounds that letters represent. In Japan, most kids can recite their ABCs from the famous song played whenever children learn English. But just because you know the name of letters, doesn't mean you know how to pronounce them when you see them written down, especially as English spelling does not make much sense. So, can you work out what sound I am miming? Give up? It's the vowels found in "maid" and "paid". The mime is of someone who can't hear saying "Eh? Eh?" - the sound of "ai". 2007年12月9日

12月に入り、少しづつクリスマスムードになってきました。毎週通ってくれるプレイグループのお子さんたちもなんと７９名に達しました。とっても励みになっています。ありがとう。今月はクリスマスの歌を徐々に導入し、リズムに慣れ、さびの部分をおぼえてくれればと思っています。クリスマスパーティーのお問い合わせもたくさんいただき、ありがとうございます。残念ながら、定員に達していますので、もうご予約は受け付けておりません。ただ、クリスマス前後はクリスマステーマで進行する予定ですので、他の日にお越しいただいても、楽しんでもらえると思います。思い出に残る一ヶ月にしようと思います。

2007年11月26日

プレイグループに参加してくれる子供たちが、今日で57名に達しました。英会話レッスンの生徒さんも29名に達しました。ありがとうございます。毎朝プレイグループの準備をするとき、どの子が来てくれるのか、どんなお友達を連れてきてくれるのか、ワクワクするようになりました。毎週来てくれる子供たちの中には、形や色などをはっきり言える子が増えてきて、とても励みになっています。朝や帰りの挨拶も英語が出始めてきました。この家に遊びに来たら、「Good morning」って言って靴を脱ぎ、 「See you」って言ってバイバイするんだって、小さい子なりに考えているんでしょうね。決して無理に言わせず、子供が自然に言い始めるのを待とうと思っています。庭でできた美味しい柿が今年は200個以上とれました。子供たちと数を数えるときに使っています。一生懸命柿を袋に入れ、大事そうに持って帰る子供たちをみて、次は何の数を数えようかと考えています。

2007年11月8日

開校から１ヶ月が経過し、幼稚園年少クラス、年中クラス、年長クラス、小１クラス、小２クラス、小３，４クラス、一般英会話の初級と中級クラス、シニアチャットクラスがスタートし、生徒さんは21人に達しました。親子プレイグループも今日で延べ50人に達しました。お友達を連れて来てくださる方々、つくば未来都市からはるばる来てくださる方々、毎週来てくださる方々ありがとうございます。子供たちの中には、歌を覚え、口の動きもそれらしくなってきている子供たちが出てきました。一緒に英語で会話ができるかもという夢もだんだん近づいてきている気がします。文法に拘らず、日本語と同じように言いたいことを自信を持って英語で話す。そんな子供たちの育成のために日々励んでいます。基本的にどんなことでも英語で話しかけるようにしている理由は、英語を聞いたときに日本語に訳さず、英語で考える力をつけさせたいからです。日本語で考え、それを英語に訳して、それから話すような練習は生きた英語とは言えません。流暢にもなれません。「英語が全くわからないので、何を言っているかわからないと思います」とよく聞かれます。赤ちゃんが日本語を学んで行く過程と英語を学んでいく過程は同じです。外国語だから違うと言うことはありません。繰り返し話しかけることで自分なりに理解し、使い始めていくものです。子供はスポンジと同じ。何でも吸収できてしまう不思議な力をもっているんです。アメリカにいる頃のルームメイトはスイスで生まれた韓国人でした。15歳でも英語、ドイツ語、韓国語、フランス語がペラペラでした。生まれたときからそういう環境なので、4ヶ国語話すのは当たり前だと思っていたと彼女が言っていました。彼女の友達や家族が来米したときは、とっても不思議でした。みんながみんな最低4ヶ国語話せるので、家族の中でもいろんな言語が飛び交っていたからです。幼少時期に外国語を教えるとこんがらがるのではという日本的な考えを見事に打ち消してしまう体験でした。　由恵

Open for three weeks

I can't believe that we have only been open for three weeks, it feels more like three years. Everyone in the house has been putting in a lot of work to get Tower English off the ground and we hope our new students can see the results. I want to thank three people: my mother-in-law, who races against the clock every morning to get the classroom spotless for the toddlers; and our two daughters, who, even at the ages of two and five, help the business by joining in the teaching of the younger kids and keeping out of the way of the adults. All three stay in the background, but without them there could be no business. 

2007年10月6日

10月2日に待ちに待った教室がオープンし、1週間が無事に終わった。朝のプレイグループでは毎日素敵なお子さんたちに出会えて楽しい。三日間続けて来てくれた子は、2歳前にして、BlueとRedらしき音を発し始めた。感激する瞬間だった。Goodbye Songとして利用している歌は、全身運動。終わったあとは、親子で息切れしているが、うれしそうな子供の笑顔を見ると、もっともっとがんばろうと言う気になる。イギリスにいるときに、娘のお友達が遊びに来ては、庭で裸足で踊っていた歌。懐かしくも思いながら、いつかこのプレイグループに来てくれる子供達が、「You put your left arm in.......」って歌ってくれるときが来るんだと楽しみが増えた。子供の耳は柔軟で、驚かされるほど。「A doggy says woof woof. A frog says ribbit ribbit.」と一緒にパズルをしていた2歳の子が5分後、「Ribbitってなあに？」って日本語で聞いてきた。ちゃんとRの発音になっていた。どんなに小さくても、聞いていないようでちゃんと聞いている子供たち。間違いなく、しっかりと発音重視で話しかけていこうとつくづく感じた。来週は英語でレストランごっこに挑戦。

We're in business

The signboard is up and the secret is out... yes, we are open for business and we are still standing after a hectic day! Many thanks to the good folk of Kounoyama and further afield who sent or brought us flowers and sent messages of support, they were much appreciated. The playgroup got off to a great start thanks to the mothers and children who visited. We were told that one two-year-old enjoyed it so much she needed an extra two-hour nap after she got home... we are certainly happy to give mothers any extra help, I know I could do with a nice long nap now...

Let's get-together

Calling all foreign nationals, lovers of English and anyone else at a loose end with a passion for chatting (in English!): Let's get together, have some fun and speak English once in a while for free. It's just an idea at the moment, but wandering around Abiko we have been struck by how many foreign families there are with kids, who like ours, are in need of exercising their English muscle. We'll think about the nitty gritty of when and where to meet up (maybe Christmas/Bounenkai to start with), but if any of you dear readers have any thoughts, feel free to e-mail us. And now, back to preparing for showtime... on October 2nd, 2007, remember?

イギリスから7年振りに帰国して、早いものでちょうど1ヶ月が経過。「日本の夏は大変よ！」とあっちこっちで言われ、覚悟してきたが、なかなかこの暑さは新鮮に感じた。日本の夏も蚊の存在も知らない娘たちも、日焼けし、毎日走り回っている。一安心。4月に家探しのため1週間だけ来日した時、初めて我孫子を訪問し、富枡旅館さんの真心こもったおもてなしに感動した。関東全域で家探しをしていた時の不動産会社コンタクト数は154件だったが、最初から最後まで変わらずお付き合いいただき、すばらしいカスタマーサービスを提供してくれたのは、天王台のさくらエステートさんだった。高野山の皆さんもみんな素敵な方々で、毎日いろいろな人と出会い、お話できるのが楽しい毎日。いつもお世話になっているたびやのおばちゃんを始め、ホームメードの美味しい野菜や果物を分けてくださる近所の方々には本当に感謝している。東京のマンションに住んでいた頃は、こんな経験はゼロでした。不安だらけの日本帰国だったが、今は日本のよさ、日本人のすばらしさにあらためて感動している毎日。由恵

New in town

We've been in Japan for exactly one month now and are beginning to find our feet in Kounoyama. Our eldest daughter already knows where the best swings in the neighbourhood are, and I know at least two ways to walk to Tabiya's. Tabiya-san always manages to find a gift of rice crackers for our daughters or cheese for me whenever we drop by. Thanks for that. While I'm on the subject of thanks, I'd like to mention an English graphic designer, Nick Willett, who came up with our logo and, more importantly, encouraged me to take the plunge and move to Japan to start our own business. If you want to see some of his best work, please check out his company website. His wife is Japanese and they live in England, but I am sure he will visit Kounoyama soon. When he does, we'll both swing by Tabiya's to stock up on beer, cheese and good conversation.
